Does the rising sun affright
Curated by Aleksandra Skowronska

It encourages and compels us to think about our connections with non-human and beyond-human entities: from metal deposits and radiation to yeast, mussels or air. It does not favour humans. It does not lend itself to being romanticised or fetishised, tamed or objectified. Developed by Timothy Morton, dark ecology is a concept that highlights the mystery and complexity of ecological problems, often beyond the reach of our (human) consciousness. It is a philosophical tool that allows us to examine our relationship with the world, which is undergoing increasingly rapid and difficult to understand changes. It enables us to find our way in the dark — in the spectrum of strange and incomprehensible transformations that manifest themselves in events of varying scales: from the whole planet to the individual human body.

The artists invited to participate in the exhibition, whose biographies and memories are rooted in the moment of transition, themselves embody the category of spectrum, this time across generations. On the one hand, they reach the end of the ‘long 20th century’ (to quote the sociologist Giovanni Arrighi) — a period of global capitalist expansion and extractivism of the planet, its deposits or biosphere; on the other hand, they are part of the 21st century ecological awareness and narratives of ‘planetary care’ or the concept of ‘care for post-nature’ formulated by the researcher Ewa Bińczyk, often accompanied by a sense of helplessness of the individual deprived of sufficient agency.

Individual responses to the aforementioned transition can be seen in creative practices — in working methods and choice of materials (post-industrial waste and objects of everyday use), in references to organic themes, in collaborations with non-human, technological and organic entities, in the use of categories of strangeness, mutation and adaptation, or in the introduction of ironic or erotic motifs. This involves attempts to develop emancipatory strategies or to articulate an attitude towards crisis and apathy.
Artistic reflection is not limited to the contemplation of (dark) ecology. It transcends the assumed point of departure and seeks to reformulate the normative concepts and categories necessary in a time of transition — identity, politics, time, matter, future, humankind, and life.
The title of the exhibition is deceptive and, like the entities in Morton’s philosophy, conceals its intentions and semantic scope. The phrase, taken from a poem by William Blake and translated into Polish by Zygmunt Kubiak, carries meanings related to the transition between night and day, darkness and light, filled with a timid hope for the future.

Hymne aux murènes
Curated by Mathilde Belouali

Cf. Laure Murat, Passage de l’Odéon, Fayard, 2003 (réédition L’imaginaire Gallimard, 2024), p. 10-11.

Psychotic Property, Neurotic Garden
Curated by Marta Santi
‘Psychotic Property, Neurotic Garden’ is the second double exhibition by Claude Eigan and Jake Kent, curated by Marta Santi at Klemm’s showroom. The show exists as a sequel to ‘CJ’s Place’, a show produced at Gr_und in Berlin in 2021, representing a first meeting point or potential site of community.
‘Psychotic Property, Neurotic Garden’ is an homage to pre-existing and existing subcultural and/or queer spaces, and a reflection on the soft-spots and rupture lines of the communal. The exhibition creates an immersive environment that triggers memory and intimately links the space to its temporality and impermanence. A house facade is built, acting both as ‘physical border’ and as an architectural device that opens the discussion around property, ownership and function.
In embracing the transient, communities find strength and adaptability. Social spaces and sites of community are constantly in survival mode, reflecting the struggles of a community in need to hustle at all hours. ‘Psychotic Property, Neurotic Garden’ is an attempt to redefine the concept of ‘space’ based on the collective memoir of our cultural landscapes — not without a sense of hope in our ability to adapt and create, and putting trust in the potential of resistance.
Claude Eigan (FR) is an artist living and working between Berlin and Marseille. In his practice, Claude Eigan anchors physical places and personal references to objects whose familiar connotations are at times replaced by something strange and potentially hostile. Through gestures of physical confrontation, the visceral materiality of his works opens a gaze on the complexity of bodies and their interconnectedness with the spaces they inhabit.
Jake Kent (UK) is an artist and musician, living and working in Berlin. Working predominantly in ceramics as an individual and on canvas in his multiple ongoing collaborations, Kent produces work that is rooted in the exploration of subcultures and their persistent presence in society. The works are less nostalgic and more centered on the combined and uneven resistance subcultural spaces and underclass people continue to maintain against rampant capitalist-totalitarian domination of all aspects of life.

CJ’s Place

As squatters we would take over a house that had been empty a year or many. We’d break the door open and a gust of dust would wheeze out along with the dead dream of somebody’s investment, motes and figures accumulating in the unmade silence while the speculators waited for the market to crash or to cash in their flats. But nothing is worth a shit if all it’s worth is money, and the empty houses all knew it too, sad city drool in the rainpipes and the door mawsscowling shut.

When we took over the house we would pull all our chairs in there. Maybe a mattress or a horseshoe for luck, some flowers someone found outside a restaurant. You and me drinking our beers in there and looking out the windows on to the new street. Everyone living on stale loaves and chickpeas until one day someone cooks up a pot of stew and after that we take it in turns. The old dust gets bright and wet with the smell of cooking and people start bringing their lovers back and we’re calling it home. And slowly, the house stops its long sulk and we all start to go about living/ there.

It always felt fucked up when we had to go.As a matter of principle we resisted the charge, mainly because it didn’t feel true; what is a rightful tenant after all but someone who does the daily work of living somewhere? But every time we’d lose or nearly. All those chairs out on the street looking like what happens when you don’t do what you’re told, and the property cops strong-arming their way through the spaces we called bedrooms and tearing out the furnish like it’s personal.

And then we’d move along, and we’d start again. They always get the house but we have, we have,we have our

I didn’t know another way to do it. Didn’t know which cupboard I should use or if I’d fit inside it otherwise. So I made a new thing from an old thing and it changes all the time but it alway goes a little bit like this:

We move into an empty house. This time we pay the money and we sign down and gather.Buy-to-lets are like neglected animals, silent & skittish: you walk around the cold open rooms made up all nice but you know it’s still just a sell until you find a chair out on the street and pull it inside. People bring their lovers home and start cooking dinner there. You and me drinking our beers in there and we’re cooking dinner for lovers and friends and the guests from elsewhere or just for one another and inevitably it starts that we go/ about/ living/ until the market crash means cash for flats, and all our chairs sitting out on the street. But the lovers and friends and the guests from elsewhere/ are what we have left/inn/ it because

They always get the house. But we have, we have,
we have our –

Anything goes when in love

Curated by

Michal Stolárik

Exhibition Anything goes when in love is the fourth contribution to the Anything
goes series – projects that have annually populated the White & Weiss
Gallery in Bratislava since 2019. Simple plot lines are used for presenting
current trends in contemporary European visual arts, connecting and stimulating
artistic scenes and the activities of their representatives. Previous three
exhibition cycles – Anything goes (2019, artists: Svetlana Fialová, Pavla
Malinová, Nana Mandl, Titania Seidl), Anything goes pt. 2: Techno ed.(2020, artists: Botond Keresztesi, Nika Kupyrova, Alex Selmeci & Tomáš Kocka
Jusko, Céline Struger, Nik Timková) and Anything goes pt. 3: Phoenix(2021, artists: Radek Brousil, Filip Dvořák, Šimon Chovan, Ádám Horváth, Lukas
Thaler & Titania Seidl, Adam Šakový) prove the potential of exhibition set
ups inducing positive reactions, mutual confrontations of artworks, and
creatively stimulating dialogues. Although local audiences often embrace only
the works of local artists, it is the very connections between local and
international artwork, or premiere introductions of international artists in
Slovakia that has become the key of this curator’s series.

Anything goes when in love – is an
international exhibition, a seemingly visual essay reacting to issues of
relationships, affinity, sympathies, or antipathies. The title itself,
potentially a subtitle for any romantic comedy from the beginning of this
century is rather ironic. It actually outlines the possible concept of
a relationship, things it brings about. Be it a trivial attraction between
humans, a natural inclination towards what we think we need, or an
increasingly present affinity towards objects stealing our attention -
relationships may be magnificent, filled with optimism or paratrophic and toxic
with fatal consequences. Thus, this exhibition is not a mere romanticizing
love story. Insinuated ideas of relationships become an ambivalent emotional
ride, following the connections and mutual effects of objects, humans or
animals. It offers a natural account of intimacy, inexplicable attraction,
parasitisation, conscious or unconscious dependencies, natural gravitation and
forbidden fruit.

The
curator’s project represents current trends in the production of
internationally active artists– Claude Eigan (France, based in Berlin), Sári Ember (Brazil, lives and works in Budapest),
Monika Grabuschnigg (Austria, lives and works in Berlin) and Eliška Konečná
(Czech Republic, lives and works in Prague). Their individual works depict
topics directly linked to relationships, mainly through styled figural motifs,
though original symbolism, metaphorical scenes or personal mythologies
represent a significant part of the selection that embodies the current
update of traditional artistic techniques such as ceramics, drawing, textile or
ceramic paintings. Creation of most of the artworks was prompted by this
exhibition. They are characterized by formal appropriations followed by the
ideological repositioning of the context of original prototypes. Comeback to
nature, ephemeral situations and organic materials is clearly present. One can
observe bewilderment by craft, joy from physical contact with the materials
used – all in stark contrast to the digitalization of the world (and) arts.
Exhibited works communicate through universal language, though inspired by
intimacy or personal experiences to a great extent. They are based in history
and myths, spotted and processed through the principles of pop culture. Yet
again, anything goes...
	The
minimalistically tuned, albeit ample installation by Claude Eigan
(b.
1983, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France, live and work in Berlin) opens the
exhibition. Their productions are characterised by an attraction to sculptures,
inspired by contemporary poetry, objects of daily life as well as various
biological materials chosen from their natural environment. Then they
deconstruct them, monumentalize them, transforming their colours and forms.
Anxious jittery feelings resulting from a twisted reality come as a result;
reality that takes over familiar details or specific elements activating the
memory and stimulating personal imagination. A parasitic series of elegant
ceramic objects Supper Host (2020) spreads on the gallery walls,
luring us with its organic, shiny shapes and glossy enamels. A closer look
unveils styled bodies of ticks – parasites searching for their hosts and
sucking on their blood. The odds are high one could contract a disease from
them, which naturally defines this as a one-way beneficial relationship,
but still, their attractive look is dangerously captivating. The installation
is combined with a monumentalized trivial object: a beer cap (Sea Street
Lovers, 2022) inspired by this exhibition. Eigan transform it into
a surreal vision of pearl shells intentionally positioned somewhere on the
brink of a kiss and a bite. Eigan create a romantic and ironic ode to
summer (or efemeral) love adventures from the sizzling streets of Berlin.

Inner Saboteur (I, II, III
Extraction is a common strategy in art making, its an instinctual purge from the immaterial mind into a form to be understood by the other. Yet Inner Saboteur is more about the strategy to avulse one’s own mind; the creator’s mind. The sculptural yogic convulsions, three beheaded guttural bodies retch and contract on their knees. It’s ambiguous to the viewer if they are in some domestic labour routine or dutifully praying to an unseen god. Bolted to the floor half-sphinx half-gut their green skin testifies to something not of this world. Yet their bodies know the contemporary mantra only too well…

This world is one of holding one’s stomach, the jarring daily bread that is fed to us from the vectors of media. Cause gastro gut-wrenching panics that suffocate our true inner emotions. Our intuition has been skinned from this organ in favour of echo chambers, identity politics and mediated coverage.

This lost sentiment of trusting oneself can be seen further in the sculptures when likening them to the ancient image of Narcissus, the sculptural forms of Inner Saboteur bend down looking into an imaginary pool, only they are headless. They can never recognise themselves with no eyes or mind in which to form their own portraits. They only gape from their guttural perspective- in a state of futility, not to dissimilarity to the self-images we are surrounded by in our own media pools. We see more and more of our own image today but in turn, we seem to have less and less connection with it. Locked in an endless reflective pool just as Narcissus was. We pine our lives away silently, watching as our gut eats itself - sated on its own breath.

As the French philosopher, mystic and political activist Simone Weil once said: “Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be attained only by someone who is detached.” Eigan’s sculptural beings give us that opportunity of detachment as we stand looking down at our own subconscious shadows, watching them nauseate on our own lives.

dandelion menace
curated by Thomas Conchou

dandelion menace is
Claude Eigan's first monographic exhibition in France. It unfolds around plant
presences that form three families: fists bouquets, shields corollas, and wolf
trap leaves, all linked to the central figure of taraxacum, which gives
the exhibition its title. Commonly called pissenlit in French (piss in
bed), in reference to its diuretic properties, this plant with depurative
virtues is also called dent-de-lion for its sharp leaves and bushy
yellow collar. The works presented at Artemis Fontana all trace, in their own
way, the emotional coordinates of the artist. The fists of their friends and
relatives make up the intertwined cornucopias in the series Soft and Stone
and High, 2020, chimerical presences oscillating between the floral and the
aquatic: somewhat plants, somewhat mermaids. The outlines of Berlin's pavements
inhabit the series under no kings, 2021, composed of wall pieces
arranged in a defensive formation. Straps in the back allow them to be worn on
the arm while brandishing white and purple fleur-de-lis, placed upside down in
a cheeky misuse of royal and religious emblems. Finally, the coordinates of
LGBTQIA+ places dear to the artist adorn the laughing jaws of the dandelion’s
leaves in the series Pissed, 2021, alongside queer slogans and symbols.

Here, the flowers have left their lustful attitudes and have become
sharp, ready to sting, defend and attack. Just as Hammurabi's code enshrined
the saying "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" in Babylon,
Claude Eigan's works appropriate the Pink Panthers Patrol's famous "Bash
Back!": they reclaim rage as a political space, and explore the continuum
of threat, violence, and retribution from a minoritarian position. These
flowers of resilience give shape to a garden of self-defense, where the
dialectic between the representation of violence and violent action unfolds
like the two sides of a labrys, the double-bladed axe used by the Minoan
civilization as a religious symbol; historically associated with the Amazons,
it was adopted in the 70s by lesbian feminist movements and placed on their
flags.

The hovering violence surrounding dandelion menace works as a
symbolic threat, residing more in the anticipation of its implementation rather
than in its action. Rather, we are left with a disarmed threat, and the
imminence of a different future. Of the solar, royal, and masculine symbol of
the lion, assumed to bring honor to its vegetal look-alike, Claude retains
nothing. Instead, they choose to put forward the vivacious and urban
characteristics of the dandelion: capable of growing between the cracks of
concrete, the cobblestones of the streets, and through the tar. Placing itself
in a post-humanist perspective, the exhibition argues for the definition of
complex, inclusive, and shifting political subjects that account for the vulnerability
of bodies, and calls for a future where rage, violence, and anger have become
historical cultural practices, whose necessity has faded.

Caniveau Grove
curated by Christina Gigliotti

About four-hundred million years ago, the evolutionary branch that carried both insects and other life-forms, including those that would eventually evolve into humans, split apart. This division, propelled by and made greater with time, has led us to become exceedingly genetically distant to our tiny, buzzing counterparts. That said, the parasitical tendencies found in a variety of insect relations, permeates by-and-large through human society on both micro (personal) and macro (entire populations) levels. What kind of colony is this?Claude Eigan’s Caniveau Grove imagines the many faces of parasitism as a lush, volatile environment where an array of hybrid life-forms scavenge, bite, and adapt their ways to survive. Nestled in this speculative habitat, fluid overflows out from engorged ticks, resting after a big feed. A tang wafts throughout, sweet and appealing. Spindly-legged animals, perhaps descendants of those imagined by the late painter Zdzisław Beksiński, comb the bottom for a drop of nectar and invite us in to join the feast.

the many faced god.dess
curated by Thomas Conchou

While borrowing its title to the faceless, avenging deity of Game of Thrones, the many faced god·dess draws inspiration from the influence of impersonation practices on queer theory and contemporary artistic practices, amongst which drag appears paramount. From the original observations of drag performances leading to Judith Butler’s seminal book Gender Trouble to Elizabeth Freeman’s temporal drag concept, investigating the pull of the past on the present through practices of retrogression, genealogy and memory, drag practices and their sister-practices (cosplay, fandom, comedy, performance, theatricality) create a strategic, politic and reflexive stage, engaging not only with how bodies are constructed but also inhabited and interpreted. But also with how chronopolitics come to play with them : allowing to perform a critical and historical genealogy. The exhibition will gather artistic and amateur practices around the ideas of mask- wearing, summoning ancestors and mythological beings, as well as performing strategic and fractal identities, and will channel a multitude of historical, fictional or contemporary characters, stressing the multiplicity of our belongings, the impermanence of our identities, and the power of our transformations.Text by Thomas Conchou, 2021
